Calling all Heroes! “The Avengers” themed pizza party!

First off, I must admit something to you all… I am a geek, a nerd, a dork, and above all else I am me. The me that I am is a person that adores comic books and (most) comic book movies.*Note it is cool to be a geek/nerd/whatever these days so I guess I’m a cool kid now! Anyway, my favorite movie by far in the last few years has to be hands down, Marvel‘s The Avengers. So I was delighted to see that there was a chance to throw a pizza party featuring The Avengers! Not only do I love comics, I love pizza so this was basically a given that I would have a blast! So I called my sister and asked her to see if my nephews would be interested in joining (as well as herself and her husband). Of course, they said yes and all I heard about for the next week was how much they wanted to have the pizza party!

(This is totally my wallpaper on my computer, I kid you not.)

So to begin my adventure into the world of The Avengers, I downloaded the new Augmented Reality App (which, can I just mention that makes me feel like I’m in some futuristic movie) named SuperHero AR -okay, not the most glorious name, but it’s very easy to remember! The app is full of all sorts of niftiness, such as games where you can play as one of The Avengers, a function that makes your pizza box or DVD/Blu-Ray cover come to life (not really, its actually 3D, don’t worry, it won’t come to life and try to take over the world!) and many many more fun things. So with my new app on my phone and grocery list in hand, I went to Walmart where I had quite a bit of fun shopping for all the fun products and looking through all the goodies. You can see my journey here on my Google+.

Fun toys and goodies display at the front of the store by the main entrance.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK!!!

So I went on my hunt for fun goodies for my party. I happened upon many different Avengers themed things, however what really caught my eye were two areas in particular. The costume area and of course the toy zone. The costumes were very colorful and the entire “costume area” was very organized and super fun to just look at, take a look…

All this color just made me so happy and I loved the costumes. To be honest, if I wasn’t 6’4 and fluffy then I would totally buy one of these costumes for me, I think they are better than the adult costumes! As you can probably tell by now, I rather like this awesomeness. So onto the next area that really caught my eye, the toy zone.

In all honesty, it wasn’t the products that caught my eye in the toy zone, it was the signage. I am a sucker for beautiful advertising and I really love the art work used to promote such a great film. Ultimately, I didn’t buy any toys this time, though I will soon as I need to start my Christmas shopping! So I left the beautiful signage and went over to the party supplies, looking for ideas, useful stuff, etc. and boy did I find it! Look…

To start out with I’ll tell you what I did get, I got the masks, plates, temporary tattoos and the cups (sadly though the cups didn’t make it home with me and when I turned back to go get them the person after me had accidentally taken them and they were the last pack). After getting these items I had to go get a few personal items so I went to walk over to the pharmacy. On my way there I happened upon some plush blankets that I promptly scooped up as they felt deliciously comfortable and I knew my nephews would love them! Then I went to the pharmacy were I stood in line forever -this is when I started to play some more with the SuperHero AR app. Turns out, I’m Thor. :-)  Any who, I finally made it through that line and went to go check out and get home to play some more with the Augmented Reality app and to get cooking/baking!

Why yes, that is a pizza box coming to life with SuperHero AR!!!

The Augmented Reality function is so cool to use that I could very easily be distra……….*THIS IS SO COOL*………….. oh yeah, distracted from what I should be doing like talking about the impending Blu-Ray/DVD Release on September 25th or the fact that you can get an exclusive graphic novel when you pre-order it now at Walmart . Wait, did you just catch that, yep! I just said EXCLUSIVE GRAPHIC NOVEL!!!! Guys, I was fortunate to get one sent to me a bit early to check out and let me tell you, IT IS AWESOME! Anyone, whether you are a long time reader of comics or not will love this. It brings you right into the thick of things with the Avengers. No, it isn’t the graphic novel version of the movie -if thats what you are wondering. It is so much more than that, it is amazing, a very addictive read and as with all of Marvel’s work, it has a bit of humor to it. BTW guys, show them some love for creating such awesomeness for us, go tweet them HERE and tell them @zachcub sent you or go like them on Facebook HERE! Anyway, the graphic novel is a must and I suggest you get it!

After fighting the crowd at Walmart, yes I was brilliant and went right after school let out on a Friday, I, as well as my family, were HUNGRY! Luckily these pizzas from Marketside were huge so I knew we’d all be more than satisfied once they were all ready… I mean really, look at theses pizzas…

YUMMY!

So any way, I got to work on showing the fun stuff to my nephews and my lovely assistant for the night, my sister Amanda, put the pizzas in the oven. The only complaint I really have about the pizza is that you can only bake one at a time. Normally I would ignore that kind of rule and do it anyway, but after having bough Marketside pizzas before, I knew they meant it on these. So it did take a while for only three pizzas to bake but that was okay because it gave me time to prepare the cake batter and to read a bit of the Graphic Novel to my nephews!

Once the pizzas were ready they were scarfed down rather quickly…

Alex, my youngest nephew decided that he and his brother needed some sort of costume to wear while having dinner!

We ate and laughed and talked about our day, but I knew why the boys were so eager to finish their dinner early, they saw this……….

Excited doesn’t even begin to describe this!

They wanted into their costumes ASAP! So as soon as they could be excused from the table and after they washed their grubby hands and faces, I told them they could change!

BOOM! SuperHeroes Caleb (L) and Alex (R)!

This is where the fun began and they decided that they would protect me (aww) from the evil Panda (my sister and their mom). This was rather amusing and carried on for a while until Alex aka The Hulk remembered that I had made a cake, so he pulled his mask off and began to beg (you think I’m kidding don’t you) for some “Yummy Boo Cake” (sometimes he forgets his Ls). So I caved and said yes and we had cake, and it was good.

Well needless to say, the cake brought on what one could describe as a sugar coma. It was really good but the sugar rush then the sugar crash was a bit much for some people (as you’ll soon see). However, after the cake eating was done, we decided to watch The Incredible Hulk. We gathered together in my living room for one of the last times before I move 9hrs away to Houston, TX and enjoyed a movie. It was a wonderful day and evening and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Alex passed out about 10 minutes into the movie. He loves his new blanket.

Caleb fell asleep about 20 minutes into the movie.

So I hope you get to have a fun night with your family/friends sometime soon, I know I had tons of fun and will be doing this again very soon! You can see some other stories that some of my friends have done by looking up the following has tag on twitter #MarvelAvengersWMT.

*UPDATE 9/25/12*

I went to Walmart Store #100 (my favorite store) to get some fixins for Chocolate Chip Cookies and when I went in I picked it up! Yep, I got The Avengers Blu-Ray! Unfortunately the nephews can’t come over tonight, but I am going to watch it none the less!

  1. Small world! That’s where I did my shop as well. Love your photos – I tried to get a screencap of the animation-action going on my phone, but it’s difficult on my Galaxy SII. It was really fun to see all the Avengers goodies, wasn’t it?
